What Does a Great Music Producer Do?
Great video! Sometimes it's very difficult to explain what a producer does in non Hip-Hop/Electronic music. A lot of people think that artists and bands just walk in the studio and start making great music. A great producer can add a whole new dimension and help shape your sound. Keep adding more videos! These are great.
The part of "understanding who this artist is, and what that artist has to offer" is SO essential; and, I'm glad he pointed that out. Every artist has their own voice-a "sound"-and a producer helps the artist uncover and express that sound. Really helpful.
I love getting different perspectives from within the industry. Everyone has a special point of view and acknowledging this as a producer can only make something greater. A producer should be able to guide, refine and focus the raw creative energy into something that translates universally, that is the magic.
I've always been amazed to hear what a great producer can do with an artist. Ultimately, I think the producer's role is to pull out of the artist the best that's within the artist, take the artist beyond where he/she could go alone. Great producers challenge their artists artistically and emotionally - like a great coach pushes an athlete.
I completely agree w David as to what a great pro should do!! as an Artist we always want to work with someone who understands what we try to put out there and guides us to deliver it ! Amazingly
a producer should know their client, as is said in the video. I definitely agree, producers are not just tech workers piecing the video or song, but as their title says they are producing it, and being a part of the process and guiding the client, like a consultant essentially. Great vid.
We recently worked with a great engineer who was also a great musician. He gave us subtle production advice, for example, he suggested adding an outro to the song. Although I wrote and performed it, it was just the kind of idea a good producer will bring to the table, and can make a good tune be a much better tune.
A great producer brings out the best in artist, and know when to step in and guide.
Excellent video and wise words from an established producer!
In my opinion a great producer will only become such, when he can be in the studio and have a great set of ears. He has got to believe in his artist and know his soul. He has to know where the music is really coming from. Is it a life story? Did the artist write the song? It makes a difference once in the studio to be able to guide the artist and keep the artist moving in the direction of greatness. The engineer and mix down folks will be an extension of the producer’s ears as is the producer is to the artist. I believe also that the producer has the power to make an ok recording into hit recording. As an artist I find that there is a “recording mode” we go into that is not the same as the “performing mode” that we are in on stage. The producer needs to be able to know the difference between the two modes. A song can get to busy in the studio if everyone is in “performance mode” when they need to keep it simple in the studio. I remember sitting in on a few sessions with CCR and John would say “KISS” which means “keep it simple stupid”. Not saying it to anyone directly of course…But then again he was the producer, and a great one. I wish I had a producer
